Proto-Feminism in the Fathers

Maria Lectrix has added to her patristic audio treasures a remarkable sermon of Asterius of Amasea, on divorce. More precisely, it’s an homage to women — wives, mothers, and nurses. So much for the unrelenting misogyny of the Fathers.

If we lived in a real empire, Maria Lectrix would get a whopping government grant for the great work she does.

  1. Yes, but if we were living in a real empire, I’d probably have gotten exiled a couple of times by now!

The Fathers, like most dads, tend to give their advice and comments in the strongest of terms. Dads (and moms) don’t usually mince words about their daughters going out of the house in those clothes, wearing that makeup, with that particular young man. They also yell at the television, and it would probably be the gladiatorial games, the baths, and the theater if we lived in ancient Rome. But then, the strength of rhetoric might just be needed to get through the hardness of our heads….
